Learning Through Country | Land, Story and Indigenous Knowledge

The Learning Through Country stream introduces educators and learners to Aboriginal knowledge systems grounded in the relationship between people, land, water, animals and seasons. For tens of thousands of years, First Nations peoples have observed the patterns of Country to guide how communities live, travel, gather food and care for the environment. These knowledge systems reflect a deep understanding that land is not simply a place where people live. Country is a living system that holds culture, story, responsibility and identity.

Learning Through Country helps educators introduce these perspectives in respectful and age-appropriate ways. Through structured programs, educator insights and classroom resources, learners explore how Aboriginal peoples read the signs of the land, observe seasonal change and maintain balance with the environment. Rather than viewing nature only through a scientific lens, these programs invite learners to understand the cultural relationships that connect people, animals, plants and place.

Stream 2 — Learning Through Country | Land, Story and Indigenous Knowledge

Learning Through Country Early Learning

Early learning programs introduce young children to Country through storytelling, nature exploration and creative activities. Educators receive structured lesson plans and cultural guidance that help children explore environmental care, seasonal knowledge and respect for land and animals. These programs are designed for kindergarten and early childhood environments and align with the Early Years Learning Framework.

Learning Through Country Primary School

Primary programs build on early foundations and introduce deeper cultural knowledge about land, seasons, language and Aboriginal relationships with Country. Students explore how First Nations peoples observe environmental patterns, care for land and maintain cultural responsibilities connected to place. These programs support curriculum learning while strengthening cultural understanding and environmental awareness.

Learning through Country Secondary School

Secondary programs explore First Nations ecological knowledge and cultural land management practices in greater depth. Students examine topics such as seasonal knowledge systems, traditional environmental practices and the continuing role of First Nations communities in caring for Country.

Learning through Country Adult and Professional Learning

Professional learning programs strengthen the capability of educators and organisations to embed First Nations knowledge responsibly within classrooms and institutions. Participants develop cultural literacy, practical teaching strategies and a deeper understanding of how Aboriginal knowledge systems guide relationships with Country.

Learning Through Country in Practice

Learning Through Country encourages learners to observe, listen and respond to the natural world. Through storytelling, cultural knowledge and environmental observation, students begin to recognise that land, waters and animals are part of a connected system that requires care and responsibility.

By introducing First Nations perspectives into classrooms and learning environments, educators help learners develop respect for culture, community and the environment. These programs support the next generation to understand that caring for the land is not simply an environmental responsibility. It is a cultural relationship that has guided Aboriginal peoples for tens of thousands of years.
