Many educators want to introduce First Nations perspectives but are unsure how to build meaningful learning across a full term. This program provides a structured pathway that allows students to explore culture, Country and history in ways that are respectful and age appropriate.
The program helps educators:
— introduce the diversity of Aboriginal nations across Australia
— explore how Aboriginal communities understood borders and Country
— teach cultural protocols such as Welcome and Acknowledgment of Country
— introduce Aboriginal languages and cultural identity
— guide students in respectful discussions about culture and community
As a result, educators can deliver a deeper First Nations learning experience rather than isolated cultural lessons.
The program includes a sequence of educator-guided lessons designed to be delivered across a school term. Each lesson builds on previous learning while introducing new cultural ideas and perspectives.
Lessons include:
— Understanding Aboriginal Borders and Nations
— Welcome and Acknowledgment of Country
— Aboriginal Languages and Cultural Identity
— Yuwi Country and Traditional Custodians
— Storytelling and Dreaming Traditions
— Respecting Elders and Cultural Protocols
— Aboriginal perspectives on connection to land and animals
— Colonisation from an Aboriginal perspective
Through these lessons, students develop a stronger understanding of Aboriginal culture, history and community relationships.
This program supports educators with structured teaching materials and cultural guidance.
Educators receive:
— a complete term program with sequenced lessons
— educator background reading explaining cultural context
— structured lesson plans and classroom activities
— storytelling and language learning activities
— discussion prompts and reflection exercises
— quizzes and learning checkpoints
These resources help educators confidently deliver First Nations learning while maintaining cultural respect and accuracy
Schools can also choose the Yarn and Learn program option, which provides educators with additional cultural support while delivering the Aboriginal Borders and Tribes program.
This option allows educators to deepen their cultural understanding and strengthen their confidence when embedding First Nations perspectives in the classroom.
Details about the Yarn and Learn sessions are provided within the course for participating educators.
This program helps primary students develop a deeper understanding of Aboriginal cultures, languages and relationships to Country while building respect for Traditional Custodians.
Aboriginal Borders and Tribes (Program Years 1–3) is a comprehensive First Nations education program designed for primary classrooms. The program introduces students to the diversity of Aboriginal nations, languages and cultural traditions across Australia while helping them understand the importance of Country, community and cultural respect.
Unlike a single lesson or short activity, this program provides a full term of structured learning. Educators receive guided teaching materials that help students explore Aboriginal borders, cultural protocols, language, storytelling and the role of Traditional Custodians.
Through interactive lessons, storytelling, cultural discussions and creative classroom activities, students begin developing a deeper understanding of how Aboriginal communities have lived on and cared for the land for thousands of years.
Throughout the program, students explore key cultural concepts that help them understand Aboriginal perspectives on land, community and identity.
Topics explored in the program include:
— Aboriginal nations and cultural diversity across Australia
— Aboriginal borders and how countries were defined through natural landmarks
— Traditional Custodians and responsibility to Country
— Aboriginal languages and language diversity
— Cultural protocols such as Welcome and Acknowledgment of Country
— Aboriginal storytelling traditions and Dreaming stories
— Respect for Elders and cultural knowledge holders
— The importance of boundaries, permission and cultural respect
These topics help students develop cultural awareness while encouraging curiosity and respect for First Nations cultures.
The program includes storytelling lessons, cultural discussions and language learning activities. Students engage with traditional stories such as the Rainbow Serpent and explore how stories help share knowledge about land, culture and responsibility.
Language activities introduce students to Aboriginal words and cultural meanings. Through these experiences, students begin recognising that language is an important part of identity and cultural continuity.
Creative activities and group discussions help reinforce learning while encouraging students to reflect on respect for Country and community.
Aboriginal Borders and Tribes forms part of the First Nations Capability Gateway and has been developed with guidance from First Nations educators and cultural trainers.
The program supports respectful teaching of Indigenous knowledge while recognising the importance of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property. Cultural knowledge is shared with appropriate context so educators can introduce First Nations perspectives responsibly.
Two program options are available depending on the level of engagement schools require.
