In secondary classrooms, Indigenous ways of teaching and learning encourage students to think critically about knowledge, culture and responsibility. Students explore how Aboriginal communities understand relationships with land, animals, community and identity.
These learning experiences often involve discussion, reflection and exploration of cultural knowledge. Students examine how Aboriginal perspectives can help people understand the environment, cultural responsibility and the importance of caring for Country. Through these lessons, students begin recognising that Indigenous knowledge systems are complex, adaptive and deeply connected to place.
Indigenous Ways of Teaching and Learning introduces secondary students to Aboriginal knowledge systems that have guided communities for thousands of years. These learning traditions recognise that knowledge grows through relationships with Country, community and cultural responsibility.
Across many Aboriginal cultures, learning often happens through story, observation, participation and reflection. Knowledge about land, animals, seasons and community responsibilities is shared through cultural practices that connect people with the environment and each other.
For secondary students, these learning experiences provide opportunities to explore Aboriginal perspectives in greater depth. Students begin recognising that Indigenous knowledge systems include sophisticated ways of understanding the environment, society and cultural responsibility.
This stream supports educators who want to introduce Aboriginal ways of teaching and learning into secondary classrooms in respectful and meaningful ways. Through cultural learning experiences, students develop a deeper understanding of the knowledge systems that continue to guide Aboriginal communities today.
Courses for this stream are currently being developed. These future courses will introduce secondary students to Indigenous approaches to learning through cultural knowledge, language, storytelling and connection to Country. As courses are released, this stream will provide educators with structured learning experiences that support respectful and informed teaching about Aboriginal knowledge systems.
