What are Hazard Operability Studies (HAZOP/CHAZOP)?
Hazard Operability Studies (HAZOPS) are a structured approach used for identifying risks associated with an existing system or process, or a proposed new one. It is one of the most widely used techniques for process hazard analysis, allowing an organization to identify potential hazards before they become incidents. HAZOPS involve systematically analyzing each function of a system or process using guide words to consider possible deviations from its intended design or operation.
The aim of this analysis is to detect any flaws or weaknesses in the system which could lead to incidents with serious consequences such as injury or death, environmental damage, loss of production, etc. The output of this analysis is typically a series of recommendations that can be implemented in order to reduce the likelihood of these types of events occurring.
Why Use Hazard Operability Studies (HAZOP/CHAZOP)?
The main reason why organizations use HAZOPS is to ensure safety and reduce risk in their operations. By proactively identifying potential hazards before they occur, organizations can reduce their exposure to risk by implementing appropriate control measures before accidents happen. Additionally, HAZOPS serve as a useful tool for communicating safety information throughout an organization so that everyone understands what needs to be done in order to maintain safe operations. Additionally, conducting HAZOPS can improve operational efficiency by identifying areas where processes can be made more efficient or cost-effective.
Upon completion of the course, participants will have acquired the knowledge and skills to coordinate the HAZOP/ CHAZOP activity, in your workplace.
